Christening photographer in Tuscany: the ceremony and the reception

Il battesimo è una giornata breve e piena. Un’ora scarsa in chiesa, il tempo di uscire e fare due fotografie sul sagrato, e poi si è già a tavola. Non ci sono seconde occasioni: il rito non si ripete e il bambino, quasi sempre, dorme o piange esattamente nel momento che vorreste avere.

My name is Giovanni Papini and I’m a christening photographer throughout Tuscany. I work in a documentary style: during the service, I don’t move, I don’t use a flash and I don’t ask anyone to turn towards me. The real value of this service, however, lies not in the church but in the reception that follows, where relatives meet again after years apart, children are allowed to run free, and grandparents hold a grandchild for the very first time.

Alongside my photography, I shoot short video clips which capture the sounds of a day like this — the priest’s words, the names, the weeping — and not just the images.

How I work at church

The rules are set by the parish priest and should be clarified in advance, not on the day itself: some parishes allow people to move about freely, others specify a particular area, whilst others require people to remain in one place for the duration of the service. I find out in advance and follow the instructions I am given.

Le chiese toscane, soprattutto quelle antiche, hanno finestre piccole e poca luce naturale: si lavora con ottiche molto luminose e con corpi macchina che reggono le alte sensibilità, che è esattamente la situazione per cui quell’attrezzatura esiste. È anche il motivo per cui uno smartphone, in una pieve, restituisce immagini che poi nessuno guarda.

What is included in the service?

La preparazione a casa, se la volete: la vestizione, i padrini che arrivano, la confusione delle ultime mezz’ora. L’arrivo in chiesa e l’accoglienza. Il rito completo, dai riti di ingresso all’unzione, dall’acqua alla consegna della veste bianca e della candela. Le fotografie di gruppo sul sagrato all’uscita, che sono le uniche in posa di tutta la giornata. E la festa, che di solito è la parte più lunga.

I deliver the images via a private, password-protected online gallery, where they can be downloaded in full resolution. An initial selection will be available within 72 hours, with the full gallery following in the days after that.

The style

Natural and unobtrusive. I don’t set up a studio, I don’t bring props, and I don’t stage photos of the child lying on a blanket surrounded by flowers: if that’s what you want, we can do it, but that’s not what I’m here to do. What I’m looking for are genuine expressions – which, with a newborn, last a fraction of a second, and with older children, come when they stop realising I’m there.

I do very little in post-production: lighting, colour, skin tones. No filters that will make those photographs look recognisably dated in ten years’ time.

How the day unfolds

Before the ceremony

Getting ready at home is the most intimate – and most underrated – part of the experience. It’s well worth doing, especially if there are older siblings: their reaction to all the excitement is often the best memory of the day.

In church

Arrivo in anticipo per capire da dove entra la luce e dove posso stare senza dare fastidio. Durante il rito seguo i momenti che contano — il segno della croce sulla fronte, l’acqua, la candela accesa — e le facce di chi guarda, che spesso raccontano più del gesto stesso. All’uscita si fanno i gruppi: famiglia stretta, padrini, parenti, tutti insieme. Dieci minuti, non di più, perché con un neonato il tempo è quello.

The party

Whether it’s a restaurant, a villa or a private home: it makes little difference. I photograph the lunch, the toasts, the cake, the presents, and the children running off from the table. This is the part where people relax, and where you get the pictures that end up framed – far more so than those of the ceremony itself.

Nelle case private la luce è quasi sempre difficile — soffitti bassi, lampadari accesi in pieno giorno, tende chiuse — ed è una delle situazioni in cui si vede la differenza tra un’attrezzatura professionale e una qualsiasi.

Where it is celebrated: churches and venues in Tuscany

Tuscany boasts a density of historic churches that few other regions can match, and this has two contrasting implications for baptism photographs: the buildings are magnificent, but they are also dark.

Nelle pievi romaniche e nelle chiese medievali si lavora con pochissima luce naturale e con fonti che arrivano da un lato solo, spesso da dietro l’altare. Nelle chiese moderne dei quartieri il problema è l’opposto: vetrate ampie e luce abbondante, ma spesso fredda e mista a neon, che va bilanciata per non far diventare grigi gli incarnati di un neonato.

Per la festa le possibilità sono le stesse dei matrimoni in scala ridotta: ristoranti con giardino, agriturismi, ville con spazi all’aperto, oppure casa. Nei mesi caldi la soluzione con giardino è quasi sempre la migliore, perché lascia liberi i bambini e dà luce naturale per tutto il pomeriggio.

I work across all ten provinces. I’m based in Serravalle Pistoiese, so journeys to Pistoia, Prato, Florence and Lucca are short, and travel costs are not included in the quote.

Christening photographer in Florence

A Firenze fotografo battesimi dalle chiese del centro storico alle parrocchie dei comuni della cintura. Il capoluogo offre luoghi di grande valore — Santa Croce, San Lorenzo, le chiese dell’Oltrarno e di San Niccolò — e altrettanti nelle zone di Scandicci, Sesto Fiorentino, Campi Bisenzio, Empoli e Pontassieve, dove si celebra la maggior parte dei battesimi delle famiglie fiorentine.

In the basilicas in the city centre, the spaces are large and the baptismal fonts are often located in dimly lit side aisles: these are the situations where it is best to arrive a little earlier than usual to work out where to set up.

Christening photographer in Prato

In Prato, the range extends from the Cathedral of Santo Stefano, with its pulpit and the Chapel of the Sacred Belt, to the modern churches in the residential neighbourhoods and outlying villages. These are two contexts that are photographically polar opposites, and the difference is particularly evident in the images of the ritual.

La provincia è compatta: tra chiesa e ristorante si percorrono in genere pochi chilometri, il che significa poco tempo perso tra una fase e l’altra e più tempo effettivo per fotografare.

È la mia provincia. Dal Duomo di San Zeno alle parrocchie della Valdinievole e dell’Appennino pistoiese, conosco la maggior parte delle chiese in cui potreste celebrare, e questo mi permette di sapere in anticipo com’è la luce e dove posso mettermi.

Living locally also has a practical advantage: I can pop round to have a look at the church before the day of the christening without it adding to the budget, and when it comes to last-minute requests, I can actually be there.

Christening photographer in Lucca

In Lucca, the Cathedral of San Martino and the Romanesque churches in the town centre are amongst the most beautiful in the region, and are also amongst the darkest: dark stone, tall, narrow windows, and very little light reaching the baptismal font.

Christening photographer in Massa-Carrara

In the province, I photograph christenings at the cathedrals of Massa and Carrara, as well as in the parish churches along the coast and in the Lunigiana, where the churches are small, ancient and have very little natural light.

La costa apuana permette di organizzare la festa all’aperto con le Alpi Apuane sullo sfondo: è una combinazione che nel resto della Toscana non si trova e che nelle fotografie di gruppo si nota subito.

In Pisa, you can visit places ranging from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta to the parish churches in the neighbourhoods and towns across the province, from Cascina to Pontedera and all the way to the coast. The historic churches in the city centre are bathed in very directional light which, when used to good effect, produces images full of character.

Sul litorale, tra Marina di Pisa e Tirrenia, la festa si sposta spesso in stabilimenti e ristoranti sul mare: la luce di riflesso dall’acqua è morbida e riempie le ombre, ed è una delle condizioni migliori per fotografare bambini piccoli.

Christening photographer in Livorno

In Livorno, I photograph christenings from the city’s cathedral to the Sanctuary of Montenero – which remains the most popular choice amongst Livorno families – right through to the parish churches in the neighbourhoods and towns across the province.

The province stretches along the entire coastline as far as Val di Cornia: many families choose to hold their celebrations in town and then head to the seaside to mark the occasion, in which case it is worth factoring in travel time when planning the day.

Christening photographer in Arezzo

In Arezzo, you can visit places ranging from the Basilica of St Francis to the Romanesque parish churches of the Casentino and Valdichiana. These parish churches are the most fascinating – and the most challenging – to photograph: they have tiny windows, dark interiors, and it is impossible to use a flash during the service.

For the celebration, the province offers farmhouses and rural holiday accommodation with spacious outdoor areas, which, from April to October, are the ideal choice for a christening with lots of children.

Christening photographer in Grosseto

Based in Grosseto, I photograph christenings from the Cathedral of San Lorenzo to the parishes in the city and the villages of the Maremma, right down to the coast. It is the largest province in Tuscany and the least densely populated, which means the celebrations are more peaceful.

For holidays, the Maremma offers farm stays with genuine open spaces, not man-made gardens: in the warmer months, this is the ideal solution, as children can spend the whole afternoon outdoors.

Di un battesimo il video restituisce quello che le fotografie non possono: la voce del sacerdote che pronuncia il nome del bambino, il pianto quando arriva l’acqua, i brindisi a tavola. Sono le cose che a distanza di anni le famiglie riguardano più spesso, e che nessun album può contenere.

How do I do it?

Giro con lo stesso criterio con cui fotografo: nessuna scena ricostruita, nessuna intervista costruita. Registro l’audio del rito con un microfono dedicato, perché l’acustica delle chiese è quasi sempre difficile e l’audio registrato dalla videocamera, a distanza, è inutilizzabile.

The edit is short: two to four minutes, which is just the right length to ensure it’s actually watched. I also provide a vertical version for social media and, on request, the full recording of the ceremony as a separate file.

Photos and videos together

At a christening – which is an intimate event lasting just a few hours – I handle both tasks myself, alternating between them, without needing a second photographer. It is one of the few assignments where this can be done without compromising on quality, and this is reflected in the quote.

The video service is available in all ten provinces, with the same coverage as the photography service.

How much does a photographer cost for a christening?

What determines the price?

It depends on the duration of the coverage, how many stages you wish to include, and the distance involved. A service that covers only the ceremony and photographs in the churchyard takes two hours; one that starts with getting dressed at home and ends with the cake takes six. The video, if you wish to have one, is charged as a separate item.

How do I draw up quotations?

It’s all itemised, with each item listed separately, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for. If I think you don’t need something you’ve asked for, I’ll let you know straight away: this often happens with nappy-changing cover when the baby is very young and things can be unpredictable.

When to book

It usually takes three or four weeks to arrange a christening. The exceptions are periods when parishes hold a concentration of ceremonies — the weeks after Easter and the months of May, June and September — when it is advisable to make arrangements two months in advance, as several christenings are held on the same day during those periods.

Practical advice for families

What to ask the parish priest

Se il fotografo può muoversi durante il rito e da dove. Se sono ammesse riprese video. Se c’è una posizione da cui non si disturba la celebrazione. Sono tre domande di trenta secondi che evitano fraintendimenti il giorno stesso, e conviene farle voi quando concordate la data.

L’orario della celebrazione

I battesimi si celebrano spesso a mezzogiorno o nel primo pomeriggio, che per la luce esterna è l’orario peggiore: sole a picco, ombre dure sui volti, occhi socchiusi nelle fotografie di gruppo sul sagrato. Se avete margine di scelta, il tardo pomeriggio dà risultati molto migliori all’aperto.

Baptism throughout the seasons

In primavera e in autunno si può contare su fotografie all’aperto e su una luce morbida: sono i periodi migliori. In estate il caldo di mezzogiorno è un problema reale per un neonato, e conviene spostare tutto quello che si può all’ombra. In inverno la giornata è corta e le fotografie fuori dalla chiesa vanno fatte subito all’uscita, perché alle quattro e mezza è già buio.

A few practical tips

Portate un cambio in più di quello che pensate serva. Mettete in conto che il bambino potrebbe dormire per tutto il rito, e va benissimo così: le fotografie di un neonato che dorme durante il proprio battesimo sono tra le più belle che si possano fare. E lasciate perdere l’idea che tutti guardino l’obiettivo nella foto di gruppo: con più di quattro bambini non succede, ed è proprio quello che la rende bella fra vent’anni.

Why a photographer who is used to covering ceremonies

La difficoltà di un battesimo non è tecnica in senso stretto: è sapere cosa sta per succedere. Chi ha fotografato molti riti sa che dopo l’omelia si sposta tutti verso il fonte, che l’unzione arriva prima dell’acqua, che la consegna della candela è il momento in cui i padrini si emozionano. Sapere la sequenza significa essere già nel punto giusto invece di seguire in ritardo.

L’altra metà è la discrezione. Un battesimo è una celebrazione religiosa, non un servizio fotografico con del rito intorno: chi lo dimentica si vede, e chi partecipa se ne accorge prima di chiunque altro.

Frequently Asked Questions

In which provinces of Tuscany do you photograph christenings?

All ten: Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Livorno, Arezzo, Siena and Grosseto. I’m based in Serravalle Pistoiese, so travel to neighbouring provinces doesn’t affect the quote.

How far in advance do I need to book?

Three or four weeks are usually enough. In the weeks after Easter and during May, June and September, it’s best to book two months in advance, as parishes tend to schedule their celebrations at the same time and it’s not uncommon for several families to be looking for a photographer on the same day.

Is it allowed to take photographs during the ceremony?

It depends on the parish priest, and it’s the first thing you should ask when you’re agreeing on the date. Some parishes allow you a degree of flexibility, whilst others specify a fixed position. I go along with whatever is agreed and never use a flash during the service.

Churches are dark: will the photos still turn out well?

Sì. Uso obiettivi molto luminosi e corpi macchina che tengono bene le alte sensibilità, quindi non serve il flash. È esattamente la situazione per cui quell’attrezzatura esiste, ed è anche il motivo per cui le fotografie fatte con il telefono in una pieve poi non le guarda nessuno.

Will you be covering the reception after the ceremony as well?

Sì, ed è la parte che consiglio di non tagliare. Il rito dura un’ora, la festa dura il pomeriggio: è lì che ci sono i parenti che non si vedono da anni, i bambini liberi e le espressioni che finiscono incorniciate.

Are you filming as well?

Sì. Su un battesimo gestisco foto e video da solo, alternandoli, senza bisogno di un secondo operatore: è un evento raccolto e si può fare senza sacrificare niente. Il montaggio è di due o quattro minuti, con l’audio del rito registrato con microfono dedicato.

How long does it take for you to deliver the photographs?

An initial selection within 72 hours, so you’ll have something to send to your relatives straight away. The full gallery will be available in the following days, in a private, password-protected gallery, with full-resolution downloads.

What if the baby cries or sleeps the whole time?

Succede quasi sempre, ed è previsto. Un neonato che dorme durante il proprio battesimo dà alcune delle immagini più belle possibili, e uno che piange quando arriva l’acqua racconta quella giornata meglio di qualsiasi posa. Non è un problema da risolvere: è la giornata.

Do you take group photos with all your relatives as well?

Sì, all’uscita dalla chiesa. È l’unico momento in posa di tutta la giornata e lo tengo volutamente breve, dieci minuti al massimo, perché con un neonato e diversi bambini il tempo utile è quello.

Will the photographs be published?

Only with your written consent. The gallery is private and not indexed by search engines. As these are images of minors, this rule allows for no exceptions.
