Wedding photography
Il giorno del matrimonio passa più in fretta di quanto vi aspettiate. Ve lo dicono tutti e nessuno ci crede finché non succede: ci si sveglia presto, e all’improvviso è sera e non ricordate metà di quello che è successo. Le fotografie servono soprattutto a questo, a restituirvi le ore che avete vissuto senza riuscire a guardarle bene.
My name is Giovanni Papini, and I’m a wedding photographer in Tuscany. I work in a documentary style: I follow the day as it unfolds, without moving people around, without asking them to repeat anything and without interrupting. There is a posed element — your portraits, the group shots with your families — and I do that well, but it lasts only as long as necessary and not a minute longer.
I cover all ten provinces of Tuscany and regularly work around Lake Como as well. As well as photography, I produce video footage including editing, and, on request, provide a photo booth for the reception.
I don’t sell fixed packages. I prefer to tailor the quote to your specific day, because a wedding with sixty guests in a farmhouse and one with two hundred in a villa don’t have the same requirements, and charging both the same amount would mean getting it wrong for one of them.
Comincio dai preparativi, che sono la parte in cui si è più sé stessi: la casa in disordine, le amiche, la madre che si commuove mezz’ora prima del previsto. Poi la cerimonia, civile o religiosa, seguita da lontano e senza flash dove non si deve. Quindi il ricevimento, che è la parte più lunga e più imprevedibile: gli aperitivi, i discorsi, il taglio della torta, il ballo e quello che succede quando la gente si dimentica di essere fotografata.
Nel mezzo, i vostri ritratti. Li faccio nell’ora in cui la luce è migliore, non quando capita, e vi porto via dal ricevimento per il tempo minimo indispensabile: venti o trenta minuti, non due ore.
Un secondo fotografo, che serve davvero quando gli sposi si preparano in luoghi diversi o quando gli invitati superano il centinaio. Le riprese video, con montaggio. Il photo booth per il ricevimento. Il servizio di engagement prima del matrimonio, che oltre a darvi delle belle immagini serve a prendere confidenza con la macchina fotografica prima del giorno che conta. E l’album stampato, che resta l’unico modo perché quelle fotografie vengano guardate davvero anche fra vent’anni.

Firenze è la provincia con la maggiore densità di location matrimoniali della Toscana: le ville medicee sulle colline, le tenute del Chianti fiorentino, i giardini storici, e per le cerimonie civili la Sala Rossa di Palazzo Vecchio, che resta una delle sedi più richieste d’Italia.
Il rovescio della medaglia è l’affollamento. Nel centro storico, nei mesi di alta stagione, un servizio di ritratti va programmato all’alba o nell’ultima ora di luce, altrimenti si finisce con lo sfondo pieno di turisti. Fuori città, verso Fiesole e il Chianti, il problema non esiste e la luce delle colline al tramonto fa gran parte del lavoro da sola.
Le crete senesi sono il paesaggio che chi si sposa in Toscana ha in mente ancora prima di scegliere la location: colline nude, filari di cipressi, strade bianche. Nella provincia si concentrano alcune delle tenute e dei borghi più richiesti, dalla Val d’Orcia al Chianti senese.
Il periodo cambia moltissimo il risultato: verde a maggio, oro tra giugno e luglio, terra scura dopo l’aratura. Se avete già scelto la data vale la pena sapere cosa vi troverete intorno; se la data è ancora aperta, è uno dei pochi casi in cui conviene sceglierla anche in base a questo.
La provincia di Pisa offre due mondi diversi: le ville e i casali delle colline pisane nell’entroterra, e il litorale con Marina di Pisa e Tirrenia per chi vuole il mare. Il Parco di San Rossore aggiunge una terza possibilità, con pinete e viali alberati che danno ombra anche a metà giornata.
For ceremonies in the city, the banks of the Arno in the early hours of the morning cast a very soft, reflected light and provide a backdrop that evokes Pisa without relying on the Tower, which works far less well in wedding photographs than one might imagine.
A Livorno il matrimonio è quasi sempre legato al mare: cerimonie sulla costa, ricevimenti con vista sul Tirreno, ritratti sulle scogliere al tramonto. La particolarità di questo tratto di costa è che il sole cala frontalmente sull’acqua, cosa che sul versante adriatico non succede.
Il vento è il fattore da mettere in conto: sulla costa livornese è quasi sempre presente. Sui capelli e sui veli lunghi aiuta più di quanto disturbi, ma va previsto nella scelta dell’acconciatura e nella pianificazione dei momenti all’aperto.
The province of Arezzo has two distinct character: the Valdichiana, with its open countryside and renovated farmhouses, and the Casentino, which is more secluded and wooded, with Romanesque parish churches and castles. These are very different settings, and those who get married here usually already have a clear preference between the two.
Le pievi del Casentino sono edifici antichi con finestre piccole: dentro c’è pochissima luce naturale. Sono situazioni che si affrontano con ottiche molto luminose e senza flash, perché in una chiesa di quelle dimensioni il flash si vede e si sente da ogni banco.
The Maremma is the least developed part of Tuscany, and is the ideal choice for those seeking a wedding that isn’t straight out of a postcard: long, deserted beaches, pine forests stretching right down to the sand, and authentic farmsteads that haven’t been rebuilt for tourism.
Il vantaggio pratico è lo spazio. Anche in piena stagione si trovano tratti di costa e di campagna dove non c’è nessuno, il che rende possibili ritratti al tramonto che altrove richiederebbero di chiudere una location.
Le ville lucchesi sono tra le location matrimoniali più scenografiche della regione: giardini all’italiana, limonaie, scalinate monumentali. In città, le Mura offrono un anello verde e in piano che funziona bene per i ritratti senza costringere nessuno a camminare su terreni difficili con l’abito lungo.
As you head towards the Garfagnana, the landscape changes completely and becomes mountainous, with a cooler, more contrasted light. It’s a less well-trodden route, which is part of its appeal, but it does require you to plan your timing more carefully, as the valleys are in shadow early on.
It’s my province. I work between the Valdinievole – with its spa resorts in the Montecatini area – and the Pistoia Mountains, for those seeking a more intimate setting. In between lies the plain with its nurseries, which, as a backdrop, are an underrated asset: neat, clean and deep rows of greenery.
Being local has a real advantage: I can visit the venue with you before the wedding without it costing anything extra, and on the day itself I don’t have to worry about finding my way to an unfamiliar place in the traffic on a Saturday in June.
Prato e la sua provincia sono meno battute dal turismo matrimoniale, e questo è un vantaggio: le ville medicee di Poggio a Caiano e Artimino sono a pochi chilometri dalla città e non hanno l’affollamento delle equivalenti fiorentine.
As you head towards Calvana and Montalbano, the landscape opens up into lesser-known but very photogenic hills, offering the chance for outdoor photo shoots just a few minutes’ drive from the reception venue – something that, on the wedding day, matters more than it might seem when you’re planning.
There’s something here that you don’t see anywhere else in Tuscany: the sea and the mountains both fit into a single frame. The Apuan coast has the Apuan Alps behind it, and at sunset it offers one of the most striking backdrops in the region.
Nell’entroterra ci sono le cave di marmo, che come location per i ritratti sono spettacolari e complicate: bianco accecante, contrasti estremi, accessi da concordare in anticipo. Si può fare, ma va organizzato prima e non deciso il giorno stesso.
Video is no substitute for photographs, nor is it a more modern version of them: they are two different things that evoke different memories. Photographs capture glances; video captures voices — the promises, the conversations, the way your father clears his throat before speaking.
Giro in stile documentaristico, come per le fotografie: niente interviste costruite, niente scene ricostruite dopo. Registro l’audio della cerimonia e dei discorsi con microfoni dedicati, perché è la parte che si rovina più facilmente e che dispiace di più perdere.
I’ll provide a main edit lasting a few minutes, plus a short version for social media and vertical clips taken from the same footage. If you’d also like the full ceremony and the speeches in full, these will be included as separate files.
When both photos and videos are requested, at small weddings I handle both by alternating between them; at larger weddings I work with a colleague, because during the exchange of rings you can’t choose which of the two to prioritise.
Le riprese seguono la stessa copertura del servizio fotografico. Quello che cambia da un territorio all’altro è cosa rende meglio in movimento.
Le ville sulle colline e i giardini storici danno riprese di ampio respiro; in città conviene concentrare il girato negli interni e nei cortili, dove l’affollamento non entra nell’inquadratura.
The Crete region lends itself to slow, sweeping shots: a dirt track winding through the cypress trees, explored on foot, is, when seen in motion, more evocative than any still portrait.
San Rossore and the pine forests provide soft, even light, which is ideal for filming as it avoids the harsh contrasts caused by direct sunlight on the bride and groom’s shoulders.
A sunset directly over the sea allows for backlit and silhouette shots that work very well when filmed in motion, with the sound of the waves providing a natural backdrop.
La Valdichiana con i campi aperti e il Casentino con i boschi danno due registri opposti: uno luminoso e ampio, l’altro raccolto e più intimo.
Between the pine forest and the shoreline, continuous sequences are filmed without interruption; when edited, they form a fluid narrative rather than a collection of separate clips.
Le limonaie e i giardini all’italiana delle ville hanno una geometria che in movimento si legge molto meglio che in fotografia.
The spa resorts of the Valdinievole and the nurseries on the plain; as I know the area well, I can plan the filming schedule without any downtime.
The Medici villas at Poggio a Caiano and Artimino, where you can explore them without the queues of visitors that make things so difficult elsewhere.
The coastline, with the Apuan Alps in the background, and – for those who are up for it – the marble quarries, which in the video convey a sense of scale that a photograph fails to capture.
Se la location non l’avete ancora scelta, quello che segue vi dà un’idea di cosa comporta ciascun tipo dal punto di vista delle fotografie. Non è un elenco di posti: è quello che cambia per voi a seconda di dove vi sposate.
They create the most spectacular effect and are also the most demanding: formal gardens, grand staircases, and frescoed halls. The interiors of historic villas often have large windows, but these are usually situated on one side only, so the light is very directional and needs to be managed. The advantage is that everything takes place in a single location, with no need to move between the ceremony and the reception.
Stone lends a texture that really comes across in photographs. The problem lies with the narrow courtyards and staircases, where light struggles to reach and there’s little room to move around in a long dress. These are locations that work extremely well if you plan your shooting times according to where the sun is shining.
La scelta più rilassata, e spesso la più bella. Spazi aperti, tavolate all’ombra, olivi e vigne intorno. La luce di fine giornata in campagna è quella che dà i risultati migliori in assoluto, e in un casale di solito non c’è nessun vincolo che impedisca di uscire nel momento giusto.
Il mare porta due cose: una luce riflessa che riempie le ombre sui volti e un vento quasi costante. Sulle spiagge conviene concordare prima con la location gli accessi per il tramonto, perché è l’unico momento in cui vale davvero la pena essere lì e dura venti minuti.
Durante la giornata non do quasi mai indicazioni. Sto dove serve, anticipo dove sta per succedere qualcosa e resto fuori dai piedi. Le fotografie che le coppie scelgono per l’album, quasi sempre, sono quelle in cui non sapevano di essere inquadrate.
L’unico momento in cui vi chiedo qualcosa. Non pose da catalogo: vi propongo situazioni semplici e poi lascio che succedano, perché due persone che si sono appena sposate non hanno bisogno di istruzioni per guardarsi bene. Venti o trenta minuti bastano.
Misurata. Correzione di luce e colore, pulizia dove serve, nessun filtro che tra cinque anni farà sembrare le fotografie datate. Gli incarnati restano incarnati e il bianco dell’abito resta bianco, che è meno banale di quanto sembri quando si scatta sotto un gazebo verde.
Concordiamo insieme da che ora a che ora. Non lavoro a scatti contati: se la giornata si allunga di un’ora perché il ballo va avanti, resto. Quello che stabiliamo prima è il perimetro, non un cronometro.
A private, password-protected online gallery, with full-resolution downloads. I’ll deliver an initial selection within 72 hours, and the complete gallery in the weeks that follow, depending on the length of the wedding. The files are delivered ready for both print and the web.
The photographs are yours to use for any personal purpose. The gallery is not indexed by search engines and remains accessible only to those with the password.
About this publication: I do not use your images in my portfolio, on social media or on this website without your written consent. If you’d prefer that no photographs be published at all, that’s perfectly fine and it won’t affect the price.
I shoot with cameras that have dual memory card slots, so two copies of every photograph exist the very moment it is taken. That same evening, I copy everything onto two separate hard drives. I carry a second camera body and spare lenses with me, because if something goes wrong during a wedding, it cannot be rectified the next day.
Nella sezione realizzazioni trovate matrimoni completi e non solo le tre fotografie migliori di ciascuno. È il modo più onesto di farsi un’idea: una selezione di soli momenti perfetti non vi dice come sarà il vostro album, un matrimonio intero sì.
Le recensioni che contano sono quelle che potete verificare da soli, non quelle che riporto io su una mia pagina. Le trovate sul profilo Google dell’attività, dove sono pubbliche e collegate a persone reali.
Dalle ore di copertura, dal numero di invitati, da quanto distano tra loro i luoghi della giornata, dalla presenza o meno di un secondo fotografo e dal video. Un matrimonio che comincia con i preparativi alle nove e finisce con il ballo all’una non è paragonabile a una cerimonia civile con pranzo per quaranta persone.
Scritti, dettagliati, con ogni voce separata così vedete cosa state pagando. Se qualcosa che chiedete secondo me non vi serve, ve lo dico prima invece di fatturarlo: capita spesso con il secondo fotografo su matrimoni piccoli, dove il costo c’è e il beneficio no.
Eight to twelve months in advance, and even earlier if the date falls between May and September, as this is the period when the majority of weddings take place in Tuscany. Weekday dates and the off-season months offer much greater availability.
I’m the one who answers the phone when you call, and I’m the one who’ll be taking the photos at your wedding. I don’t pass the work on to assistants you’ve never met: if a second photographer is needed, we’ll agree on this in advance and you’ll know who they are.
I’ve been working in Tuscany for years and have already been to most of the venues. That means knowing in advance where the sun sets at six in the evening, which way to leave without going through the reception area, and which corner of the garden really works.
Due corpi macchina, ottiche di scorta, doppia scheda, doppio backup. Non è un vanto tecnico: è l’unico modo per non trovarsi a spiegare a due persone che le fotografie del loro matrimonio non esistono più.
Se la vostra timeline non funziona ve lo dico in fase di preventivo, non il giorno del matrimonio. Se l’orario che avete scelto per i ritratti è quello in cui la luce è peggiore, propongo un’alternativa. È il genere di cosa che si paga poco e vale molto.
Una telefonata o un messaggio con data, luoghi e cosa avete in mente. Serve a capire se la data è libera e se siamo sulla stessa lunghezza d’onda, che conta più di quanto si pensi su un lavoro che dura tutto il giorno.
Vi mando un preventivo scritto, in genere entro il giorno dopo. Se lo accettate, la data si blocca con un acconto e un accordo firmato in cui c’è tutto: orari, cosa è incluso, tempi di consegna e uso delle immagini.

How far in advance should I book the photographer?
Eight to twelve months, or longer if you’re getting married between May and September, which is the busiest time of year in Tuscany. For weekday dates and during the low season, the lead time is considerably shorter.
In which parts of Tuscany do you work?
In all ten provinces: Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Livorno, Arezzo, Siena and Grosseto. I am based in Serravalle Pistoiese. I also regularly work on Lake Como and, by arrangement, in other regions.
Do you take videos as well as photographs?
Yes. At small weddings, I handle both aspects, alternating between them; at larger weddings, I work with a colleague, because during the ceremony it is not acceptable to choose which of the two elements to sacrifice. The arrangement is set out in the quote.
How many photographs do you hand in?
It depends on the duration, but for a full day we’re talking about several hundred edited images. I don’t count the number of shots: I deliver all the photographs that deserve to exist and none of those that don’t.
How long will it take for me to receive them?

Do you need a second photographer?
You’ll need this if you’re organising the event across two different venues or if there are more than a hundred guests. Below that threshold, in most cases, it’s a cost that doesn’t offer enough value for money: I’m telling you this when we’re discussing the quote rather than trying to sell it to you.
Will our photos be published?
Only with your written consent. The gallery is private, password-protected and not indexed by search engines. If you would prefer that no images be published anywhere, this will not affect the service or the price in any way.
What happens if you fall ill on your wedding day?
È previsto nell’accordo che firmiamo. Ho una rete di colleghi con cui collaboro e in caso di impedimento grave garantisco un sostituto di pari livello, concordato con voi. Non è mai successo, ma è il genere di cosa che va messa per iscritto prima e non discussa dopo.
Can we do a photoshoot before the wedding?
Yes, and it’s more useful than you might think. An engagement shoot helps you get to grips with the camera over the course of a day without any pressure, and on the wedding day, you can really see the difference.
Fate anche l’album stampato?
Sì. Lo impaginiamo insieme prima della stampa, così scegliete voi cosa entra e cosa no. È l’unico formato che garantisce che quelle fotografie vengano davvero riguardate tra vent’anni: un file su un disco, statisticamente, no.
