In sport, the right moment lasts a tenth of a second. The foot striking the ball, the hand touching the plate, the face of the person crossing the finish line first: you either seize it then, or it\u2019s gone for good.<\/p>

Sono Giovanni Papini e seguo lo sport in tutta la Toscana, con la macchina fotografica e con la videocamera. I\u2019m based in Serravalle Pistoiese, in the province of Pistoia, and I regularly travel to all ten provinces of Tuscany. Below you\u2019ll find a summary of what I do in each one, including the facilities and sports typical of each area.<\/p>

What does a sports service include?<\/h2>

Every sport has its key moments and the angles from which it should be covered. These are the types of coverage I provide most often; if your sport isn\u2019t on the list, do get in touch anyway \u2013 the approach is the same.<\/p>

  • Races and competitions. <\/strong>A full report on the day\u2019s events: warm-up, the match, the substitutes\u2019 bench, the prize-giving. I move around the touchline following the action, rather than staying in one spot.<\/li>
  • Teams and individual profiles. <\/strong>An official team photo plus an individual portrait of each athlete in their kit. Around two hours for the full squad.<\/li>
  • Training and preparation. <\/strong>The side that nobody sees, which reveals the real work behind the scenes \u2013 valuable for the club\u2019s communications and for the individual players\u2019 portfolios.<\/li>
  • Endurance races. <\/strong>Marathons, trail runs and long-distance races, with coverage at various points along the route and a photo gallery organised by race number.<\/li>
  • Match highlights, vertical clips for social media, pitch-side interviews, team introductions and videos for sponsors.<\/li><\/ul>

    Firenze concentra il maggior numero di eventi sportivi della regione e la variet\u00e0 pi\u00f9 ampia: dal calcio professionistico dello stadio Artemio Franchi al basket e alla pallavolo del Nelson Mandela Forum, fino all’atletica e al rugby dell’area di Campo di Marte.<\/p>

    Nei palazzetti fiorentini lavoro senza flash, che i regolamenti vietano quasi ovunque in gara, usando ottiche molto luminose che reggono l’illuminazione artificiale senza sporcare i colori delle divise. All’aperto il problema \u00e8 opposto: negli impianti scoperti la luce cambia in fretta nel pomeriggio e met\u00e0 campo finisce in ombra mentre l’altra met\u00e0 resta in pieno sole. Sono situazioni che si gestiscono conoscendole in anticipo, ed \u00e8 il motivo per cui negli impianti nuovi arrivo prima dell’inizio.<\/p>

    Per le societ\u00e0 fiorentine realizzo highlight di partita pronti per la pubblicazione serale, clip verticali per Instagram e TikTok, interviste a fine gara e video di presentazione a inizio stagione. Sugli eventi pi\u00f9 grandi lavoro con pi\u00f9 camere, cos\u00ec l’azione principale e le reazioni della panchina si possono montare insieme.     Pistoia is my home province: I\u2019m based in Serravalle Pistoiese and I know the local sports facilities without having to study them. The Marcello Melani Stadium for football, the PalaCarrara for basketball \u2013 which has a following here that few towns of this size can boast \u2013 and the hilly routes of the Valdinievole and the Pistoia Mountains for cycling and trail running.<\/p>

    When it comes to the Pistoia-based clubs, I often work on a season-long basis rather than for individual matches: recurring footage that becomes weekly highlights, end-of-season features and material for local sponsors. For cycling and trail running in the hills, I use handheld footage and drones where permits allow, which, on those routes, completely transform the narrative compared to static shots.<\/p>

    The Prato sports scene consists mainly of youth and amateur clubs, where photographs help to maintain good relations with families and sponsors. It is a job that can only be done well by keeping a low profile: no posed shots are required, and the photographer must not be seen on the pitch.<\/p>

    For the Prato-based clubs, I produce team videos at the start of the season, highlights of league matches and short clips for social media channels. When it comes to rugby, the editing follows the phases of play rather than individual moments: it shows how the try was built up, not just the moment it is scored.<\/p>

    In Lucca, I follow the football at the Porta Elisa stadium and the indoor sports at the Palatagliate, but the most interesting part is what takes place outside the venues: the long-distance cycle races in the Lucca hills, the running races in and around the city walls, and the events that use the historic centre as their route.<\/p>

    Photographing a race that winds its way through a city means working from pre-arranged vantage points, knowing where the peloton will arrive and how much time is left to move on to the next spot. It\u2019s planning even before it\u2019s photography.<\/p>

    Gli sport acquatici richiedono attrezzatura e posizioni diverse da quelle di campo: teleobiettivi lunghi, punti di ripresa sulle sponde stabiliti prima, e la consapevolezza che l’imbarcazione passa una volta sola.<\/p>

    Per le realt\u00e0 universitarie e le societ\u00e0 pisane realizzo video di presentazione, riprese di gara e contenuti brevi per i social. Sul canottaggio le riprese in sequenza dalle sponde permettono di montare la progressione completa dell’imbarcazione, che \u00e8 quello che serve a un equipaggio per rivedere il proprio lavoro e a una societ\u00e0 per raccontarlo.<\/p>

    Livorno ha due anime sportive forti: il basket, con una tradizione cittadina che riempie il Modigliani Forum, e tutto ci\u00f2 che si svolge sull’acqua, dalla vela agli sport remieri fino alle manifestazioni in mare. Accanto a queste, il calcio dello stadio Armando Picchi.<\/p>

    Fotografare in mare e in porto \u00e8 un lavoro a parte: si scatta da un’imbarcazione in movimento, la luce riflessa sull’acqua inganna la lettura dell’esposizione e l’attrezzatura va protetta dalla salsedine. Sono condizioni che vanno previste prima di uscire, non gestite sul momento.<\/p>

    Sports videographer in Livorno<\/h3>

    Per le regate e gli eventi in mare realizzo riprese da barca appoggio e, dove le autorizzazioni lo consentono, riprese aeree: sulla vela il drone \u00e8 l’unico modo per far capire le posizioni relative delle imbarcazioni. Per il basket lavoro su highlight di partita e clip verticali, con i tempi di consegna serali che il campionato richiede.<\/p>

    Siena ha una tradizione cestistica importante, che il Palasport della Mens Sana ha ospitato per decenni, e ogni primavera diventa l’arrivo delle Strade Bianche, che chiudono in Piazza del Campo dopo i tratti di sterrato delle crete senesi.     In cycling races that pass through the Siena area, the main problem is the dust, which gets everywhere and makes it impossible to change lenses mid-race. You choose your lens configuration at the start and leave it as it is.<\/p>

    The hills around Siena are one of the places where sports video really comes into its own: the dirt tracks winding through the cypress trees, when filmed from well-chosen vantage points, convey the exertion of the race better than any photograph. For the city\u2019s clubs, on the other hand, I produce league highlights, team presentations and content for sponsors.<\/p>

    In Arezzo, I follow the football at the Stadio Citt\u00e0 di Arezzo, the indoor sports at the PalaEstra, and the numerous running and cycling events in the Valdichiana and Casentino regions. It is an area where there are many well-organised amateur clubs, and where my photography serves above all to keep ties with the local community alive.<\/p>

    For the Arezzo youth leagues, I use the same approach as I do with the professionals: I stay on the touchline, change position between halves, and don\u2019t ask the players to pose. The level changes, but not the way I work.<\/p>

    La provincia di Massa-Carrara unisce il calcio dello stadio dei Marmi di Carrara e degli Oliveti di Massa agli sport all’aperto delle Alpi Apuane: trail, corse in montagna e manifestazioni che si svolgono su percorsi impegnativi, spesso raggiungibili solo a piedi.<\/p>

    High-altitude races require a different approach to those on the flat: you choose a point, get there before your competitors and stay there, because it\u2019s not possible to move around during the race. On the other hand, when the mountain light is favourable, it produces results that cannot be achieved on the flat.<\/p>

At venues I\u2019m not familiar with, I\u2019ll arrive early to check the lighting and shooting positions.<\/p>

    Why sports photography is a profession in its own right<\/h2>

    It\u2019s not about having a better camera. It\u2019s just that sport takes away everything you normally rely on.<\/p>

    In which provinces of Tuscany do you work?<\/strong><\/p>

    All ten: Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Livorno, Arezzo, Siena and Grosseto. I\u2019m based in Serravalle Pistoiese, so travel times to Pistoia, Prato, Florence and Lucca are minimal. For events outside the region, we can discuss this and agree on the travel arrangements when drawing up the quote.<\/p>

    Do you take both photos and videos at the same event?<\/strong><\/p>

    S\u00ec, ed \u00e8 la richiesta pi\u00f9 frequente.     A single match usually takes one or two weeks to organise. For team events at the start of the season, it\u2019s best to make arrangements earlier: between September and October, bookings all tend to be concentrated in the same period. For multi-day tournaments, it\u2019s best to book a month in advance.<\/p>

    Do you also photograph youth and amateur leagues?<\/strong><\/p>

    Yes, and that\u2019s a large part of the work. Youth, amateur and recreational teams use the same equipment and the same methods as the professionals. For minors, consent forms are collected by the club before the match.<\/p>

    How long does it take you to deliver the material?<\/strong><\/p>

    Photos will be available within 72 hours of the race in a private online gallery, with full-resolution downloads. The video montage will be ready within five days.
