Portrait Photographer in Tuscany: Portraits, Portfolios and Personal Branding

A good portrait isn’t someone smiling at the camera. It’s the moment when they stop posing and are simply themselves: it lasts just a few seconds, almost always happens halfway through the session, and the art of it all lies in making it happen and being ready when it does.

My name is Giovanni Papini and I take portraits throughout Tuscany, both in the studio and on location. I specialise in personal portraits, portfolio shoots, professional headshots, personal branding for the self-employed, as well as corporate and family portraits. As well as photography, I also produce short portrait videos, which are just as valuable as still images for anyone presenting themselves online today.

I’m based in Serravalle Pistoiese and regularly travel to all ten provinces of Tuscany. Each area has its own locations and professional landscape: below you’ll find what I do in each one.

What sort of portraits do I take?

  • A personal portrait. In a studio with controlled lighting or outdoors, for anyone who simply wants a well-taken photograph of themselves. No theme, no staging: just the person as they are.

  • Professional headshot. The portrait to be used on LinkedIn, the practice’s website and the company profile. A plain or scenic background, with a consistent format across the whole team.

  • Personal branding. A comprehensive package for the self-employed: a main portrait, images in the workplace, close-ups of hands and tools, and vertical formats for social media. It’s designed to cover a year’s worth of communications with just one photo shoot.

  • Books and portfolios. For actors, models, musicians and anyone attending an audition. Multiple sets, costume changes, different expressions and camera angles.

  • Family portrait. At home or outdoors, on the children’s schedule, not the photographer’s.

  • Video portrait. Thirty to ninety seconds: someone talking about their work, or a silent sequence of gestures. This is the content that performs best on websites and social media today.

    Portrait photographer in Florence

Florence is the Tuscan city where professional portraiture is in greatest demand: fashion, high-end craftsmanship, creative studios, professionals and an international community that needs to present itself well in both English and Italian. The workshops in the Oltrarno district are natural backdrops for the personal branding of those who work with their hands: a portrait set within one’s own workshop conveys in a single image what an “About Us” page cannot explain.

For outdoor shots, I avoid postcard-style shots. A portrait in front of the Duomo captures the Duomo, not the person. I prefer the banks of the Arno at quiet times of day, courtyards, internal staircases, and walls that provide a backdrop without stealing the limelight.

Portrait videos and personal branding in Florence

For professional practices and businesses in Florence, I produce short promotional videos filmed on site, with or without interviews. For those who work by hand — restorers, goldsmiths, tailors, luthier — the video captures the gesture, which is precisely what a photograph can only hint at. I also provide a vertical edit for social media, created from the same footage.

    Portrait photographer in Prato

Prato is synonymous with the textile industry, often family-run and now in its second or third generation. Here, the most frequently requested type of portrait is the corporate one: the owner, the team, and the staff on the shop floor. These images are used on the website, at trade fairs and in catalogues, and must look good both in large print and in small online formats.

In the warehouses and production areas, the lighting is almost always a mixture of different sources, with industrial neon lights that alter the colour of the skin. I work with portable lighting that is balanced to suit the environment, so that the portrait looks natural without appearing to be pasted onto the background.

Portrait video and corporate presentation in Prato

For businesses in Prato, I produce promotional videos that alternate between an interview with the owner and footage of the manufacturing process. This format works well at trade fairs and in sales presentations, where viewers want to understand who is behind the product even before they see the product itself.

    Portrait photographer in Pistoia

Pistoia is my home province: here I work both on location and in the areas I know best in the region. The local community is made up of nurseries, craftspeople and professionals, and portrait photography is particularly useful for those who need to showcase their business online in a market where trust still plays a major role in people’s choices.

The historic centre offers simple, well-lit backdrops at the right times of day, and the nurseries on the plain are an underrated location: neat rows of greenery that provide a clean backdrop without distracting the eye. As it’s nearby, I can also arrange short sessions at inconvenient times, something that wouldn’t be feasible if it were further away.

Portrait videos and personal branding in Pistoia

I produce short promotional videos for businesses and professionals in Pistoia, filmed either on-site or on location. For nursery owners and craftspeople, the video showcases the scale of their work, which is lost in still photography: a warehouse full of plants or a workbench captured in motion has an impact that a single photograph simply cannot achieve.

    Portrait photographer in Lucca

Lucca is a city of music even before it is a tourist destination, and musicians are among the subjects I photograph most often: they need images for posters, for their social media profiles and for the press. Alongside them are professionals from the city centre and creatives linked to the world of comics and illustration, which is concentrated here to an unusual degree compared with the rest of the region.

The City Walls are the most popular location and, for that very reason, the riskiest: you end up with everyone looking exactly the same. I prefer the inner courtyards, the underpasses beneath the City Walls with their side lighting, and the narrow streets of the city centre at times of day when the sun doesn’t shine in.

Portrait videos for musicians and creatives in Lucca

For musicians, I produce short promotional videos and performance footage, which are useful for their profiles on various platforms and when pitching to venues. For illustrators and creatives, the most effective format is a ‘behind-the-scenes’ video: hands at work, with a spoken portrait used as the opening and closing sequences.

    Portrait photographer in Massa-Carrara

In Carrara, portrait photography has a setting found nowhere else: the marble quarries. These are challenging environments — blinding white, extreme contrasts, restricted access — but they yield images that no other backdrop in Tuscany can provide. Sculptors and marble workshops are the natural subjects of this region.

When photographing white marble, the exposure must be handled in the opposite way to usual: either you expose for the skin and accept that the stone will appear almost white, or you compensate with fill light. This is a decision that must be made beforehand; it cannot be rectified afterwards.

Video portrait and documentation of the work in Massa-Carrara

For workshops and sculptors, I produce videos documenting the creative process, from the raw block to the finished piece, with a spoken account by the craftsman serving as the central theme. This material is used by the workshops for the overseas market, where customers often make purchases without seeing the items in person.

    Portrait photographer in Pisa

Pisa is a university city, and the photographs taken here are primarily intended for researchers, lecturers and professionals in the fields of healthcare and research: images for institutional profiles, publications, conferences and personal profiles. A simple, recognisable and consistent style is required when photographing an entire work team.

For departmental portraits, I use a standardised set-up, so that twenty people photographed on two different days look consistent with one another. When shooting outdoors, the banks of the Arno in the early morning provide soft light and a backdrop that evokes Pisa without needing to feature the Tower.

Video profile and presentation of the research in Pisa

I produce short presentation videos for research groups and professionals: interviews in which people explain what they do, filmed in the laboratory or office. This is the format required for funding calls, departmental websites and public outreach, where a spoken explanation can convey what a written text cannot.

    Portrait photographer in Livorno

Livorno lends portraits something that inland towns lack: the sea as a natural backdrop and a reflected light that softens the faces. ‘Venezia Nuova’, with its canals and peeling façades, is one of the region’s most interesting locations for environmental portraits.

The port and the world of maritime work are powerful yet under-explored subjects: the faces of those who work on ships, in shipyards and in port operations are far better captured in environmental portraits than in studio shots.

A video portrait of the sea in Livorno

For activities related to the sea and boating, I produce promotional videos filmed on board or at the quayside, featuring spoken commentary and footage of the work in progress. The movement of the water and the reflected light give the footage a quality that is very difficult to recreate in a studio.

    Portrait photographer in Arezzo

Arezzo is the Italian capital of goldsmithing, and this determines the type of portrait most in demand: goldsmiths, workshops and companies in the sector that need to promote themselves to an international market. Added to these is the world of antiques, with shops and restorers who need to showcase their expertise.

In goldsmiths’ workshops, work is carried out in small spaces with many reflective surfaces: gold, steel and glass. These are conditions in which the lighting must be carefully controlled, because any uncontrolled reflection will end up in the frame.

Portrait videos for goldsmiths and craftspeople in Arezzo

I produce videos that combine an interview with the craftsman with close-up footage of the craft in action. In the jewellery sector, where perceived value depends on demonstrated expertise, this kind of material carries more weight than any written description, particularly when it comes to overseas buyers.

    Portrait photographer in Siena

Siena is a city where a sense of belonging matters: the contrade, the families, the trades passed down through the generations. A portrait works here when it captures this bond rather than ignoring it. Alongside this are the professionals in the city centre and the world of the University for Foreigners, with a constant international element.

The medieval town centre features stone facades which, in the low light of late afternoon, take on a textured quality without being overpowering. Outside the town, the Crete Senesi lend the countryside a character that no other part of the Tuscan countryside can match.

A video portrait and story of identity in Siena

For businesses and professionals in Siena, I produce short promotional videos; and for those with a family or ‘contrada’ history, I create a more narrative-driven format, in which spoken accounts are interwoven with images of the locations. This kind of content goes down very well with international audiences.

    Portrait photographer in Grosseto

The Maremma is the part of Tuscany best suited to nature-based portraiture: open spaces, pine forests, unspoilt beaches, and countryside that doesn’t look like a garden. Typical subjects include those who work the land, livestock farmers, and the world of agritourism and farms that need to showcase themselves online.

In the open spaces of the Maremma, the problem is the wind – constant and strong – which makes any kind of lighting set-up difficult. We keep things simple, making the most of the hours when the sun is low, and accept that the hair will move: often, that is precisely what brings the image to life.

Portrait videos for farms in Grosseto

For farm stays and agricultural businesses, I produce promotional videos that alternate between portraits of the business owners and footage of the premises and the work carried out. This is the kind of content that drives conversions on booking platforms, where customers choose based on what they see before they read anything.

    How a portrait session works

    Before

We’ll have a chat to work out what the photos will be used for: a professional profile, a portfolio, a business website or a personal keepsake are all different purposes and will influence our choices regarding lighting, format and location. From there, we’ll decide whether to shoot in the studio or outdoors, how many outfit changes you’ll need, and exactly how many final images you’ll actually need.

    During

A session usually lasts between an hour and a half and two hours. The first part is almost always spent warming up: it’s normal, it happens to everyone, and it’s not a waste of time. I guide you through the poses without asking you to strike any unnatural ones; I show you a few shots as we go along so you know where we’re heading, and we make adjustments together if there’s anything you’re not happy with.

    After

I’ll send you a private gallery containing the full selection, from which you can choose the images you’d like to finalise. Post-production is kept to a minimum: light and colour correction, skin retouching without making it look artificial, and cropping to the formats you require. Delivery within seven days, with files ready for both print and the web.

    How to prepare

    • Take more changes of clothes than you think you’ll need: in front of the camera, some outfits work and others don’t, and it’s almost never predictable.

    • Solid colours and matt fabrics work better than dense patterns and shiny surfaces, which draw the eye away from the face.

    • If you’re planning to have your make-up and hair done, make sure you allow time for this before the session, rather than leaving it until the last minute on the day itself.

    • It’s the least technical piece of advice, and the one that has the biggest impact on the end result.

    • If you have any examples of portraits you like, please send them to me first: understanding what you’re looking for is more helpful than any verbal description.

      Use of images

The portraits remain yours to use as you see fit: for social media profiles, your website, print media or promotional material. We set out the scope in the quote, so you know right from the start where you can publish them without any unexpected restrictions.

About this publication: I do not use your images in my portfolio without your explicit consent. Many of the portraits are professional or personal, and not everyone wishes to be featured: the choice is yours and does not affect the price.

How much does a portrait session cost?

It depends on the duration, the number of people involved, the location and the number of final images. A single headshot, a full portfolio and a personal branding shoot for a business are projects that require very different levels of effort, and video production involves its own set of tasks on top of the photography.

Please let me know what you need the images for, where you are and by when: I’ll send you a written quote, with no obligation, usually by the following day. For corporate teams, we offer per-person packages that make the cost predictable even for large groups.

      Frequently Asked Questions

In which provinces of Tuscany do you take portraits?

All ten: Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Livorno, Arezzo, Siena and Grosseto. I’m based in Serravalle Pistoiese, so travel times to Pistoia, Prato, Florence and Lucca are minimal and travel costs are not included in the quote.

Which is better: studying or going out?

It depends on the purpose. Studio photography produces controlled, consistent results and is the right choice for professional headshots and team portraits. Outdoor photography also captures the setting and works best for personal branding and personal portraits. There’s nothing to stop you doing both in the same session.

I’m not very photogenic – will it still look alright?

It’s the phrase I hear most often, and it almost always refers to the experience of being in front of the camera, not the face itself. The first few photos of every session are stiff for everyone: the trick is to get past that stage, which is why a session lasts two hours rather than twenty minutes.

Do you also take portraits of all the staff at a company?

Yes, and it’s a regular task. I use a standardised setup so that the portraits remain consistent even if they’re taken on different days. For large numbers, we organise it in shifts, with about ten minutes per person.

Do you do video as well as photography?

Yes. I produce short portrait videos, spoken presentations and footage of people at work, which can also be delivered in portrait format for social media. Both can be produced in the same session, provided this is agreed in advance as it affects the lighting set-up.

How long does it take for you to deliver the images?

Within seven days of the session, in a private online gallery with full-resolution downloads and files ready for both print and the web. If you have a specific deadline, please let me know in advance: we can speed things up for urgent requests.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, and it often helps. Having someone you trust there makes the session more relaxed, especially during the first half hour. The only thing to bear in mind is that they shouldn’t give any instructions whilst the photos are being taken: two voices giving directions just end up causing confusion.

["post-7275","page","type-page","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
